My printer works OK, it is an Epson Stylus Photo 810 via a parallel
port. Luckily when I bought a new computer last April a parallel port
was included.

Recently I have heard that it is possible to get a parallel to USB cable
especially to connect a parallel printer to a USB port. Since I have
plenty of spare USB slots I wondered if there would be any advantage to
getting and fitting such a cable. And are all parallel ports the same?

There are dozens of USB to Parallel printer cables - prices range from a tenner to lots...

But why bother? Your new PC will last the life of the printer, I'd have thought, and as it has a parallel port, then you don't need a USB adapter...

Maybe you could use it to put the printer further away though? Other than that I can't think of an advantage to spending money on a USB to parallel converter cable.

Also - do have a look at the back of your printer... I think you might find a USB socket anyway - it seems to suggest it in the online manual from Epson...

Says parallel and USB here :)

Manual here http://www.nodevice.com/user_manual/download_846.html - shows where USB port is :)
