I am coming to the conclusion that accents in Windows were so much easier than Linux. I would like that not to be true!

In Windows the AltGr key put the appropriate accents on all the vowels, with 168, 164, 173 giving the tilde and the 'upside down' ? and the !

In my naïvety I assume it is equally possible in Linux. It is just a matter of someone pointing me in the right Keyboard>Preference>Options gives me a list I hardly understand. It does give Compose Key Position then options. I take RtAlt(I assume that is AltGr) Clearly I need to do more as so far it has made no difference!

My OS is Ubuntu 11.10 with updates. I do not have Windows. The Keyboard is Logitech K340. There is no Compose Key.(I do not understand the concept) Using the AltGr or windows keys or any of the numbers produce nothing useful. I am assuming something is not turned on but what?

It must be possible. I believe in technology!

You use the "compose key", but you'll need to check the window manager
to see what key is mapped to "compose". SUN keyboards use to have one
with "compose" written on, typically Window managers you "Alt GR" or
"Windows Key" or "Menu key".

I find that Gnome installations on most distributions don't actually set the compose key by default. Assuming you're using Gnome, you have to select "Keyboard" from Preferences. On the version I have, you'll find the setting on the "Layout" tab and press the "Options" button.
