Hello Gordon,

Indeed. We're ex-d, but our number still goes out. It's a separate
"feature" from BT to permenently withhold all outgoing calls which I'm
sure BT will charge extra for....

Most likely. :-)

I remember when I first noticed that we were getting Caller ID on
incoming calls. It was, up to that point, a pad for service. My missus
was straight on to BT asking why we'd been signed up to it, despite not
asking. She felt slightly embarrassed about 'telling off' BT when the
person at the other end of the line told her it's free now.

Having a (fairly) low opinion of BT at that time, I nearly fell through
the floor when she told me.

Hm. It's not free..

However if you sign up to one of their "privacy" packages (choose to refuse IIRC) then it's included in the bundle - as long as you make a certain number of chargeable calls per billing period (month/quarter). I think it's a low number, but you still need to make them.

At least that's my understanding of it all the last time I looked into trying to save the fee - and since 100% of my calls go via my VoIP platform, then BT aren't going to get a penny more than they currently get in line rental, and even then, I'm considering going to plan B, even if I won't break even for a couple of years...

It's yet another example of charging you for something that's built-in and would be there anyway, but I've more or less given up trying to understand the shenanigans that phone companies go through to try to charge you for stuff that's effectively already there.

And you don't want to get me started when it comes to VoIP companies either!!!

I reckon there's a PhD or 2 do be done in telephone billing platforms and the rip-off mechanisms the telco can apply to their customers...
