Hello, hope all is well on this fine Saturday and looking forward to seeing some people in Paignton LUG this afternoon :) I had a client send me a .rar compressed file yesterday and I had to download some additional software to uncompress it. I started looking online to see if .rar was non-free so that I could warn the client against it in future but couldn't find anything to say it wasn't. I remember something called winrar in the past which I would certainly know wasn't free - but I don't know if the format is or isn't. So obviously couldn't warn the client, and promote tar instead. Can anyone clear this little confusion up? Thanks in advance Joe
IIRC it isn't free, although unrar and unrar is available for Linux, I gather that rar is shareware and rar is freeware (not sure if the source is available for either, I'm guessing not).
RAR 3.93 Copyright (c) 1993-2010 Alexander Roshal 15 Mar 2010 Shareware version Type RAR -? for help UNRAR 3.93 freeware Copyright (c) 1993-2010 Alexander RoshalAs an alternative I'd suggest 7-Zip which is FLOSS and available for Linux and Windows (and I'm guessing Mac too). In most cases I've found it offers much better compression than standard ZIP and even slightly better compression than rar.
