My 2 penny worth...

Sherif Page plus I used in win 3.1 and was as good as Pub in those days 

Scribus if you right click on the item and use the properties gizmo you
will be surprised how easy it is to use, but the main thing is to do the
Text in a Wp first. You will get confused trying to type in Scribus. 

Set out the page with the relevant boxes, test pics etc. The right click
do "get text" and "image", set properties and Volia! 

Printing is much better now but I use the export to PDF ( sorry Tom )
and print from Evince or Similar.
