[LUG] KDE4 and widgets

I am used to being able to start a program from the desktop by  double 
clicking on the relevant icon. Or, a single click on an icon will 
select it and then I can choose to press the enter key. All this in KDE3*.

Now I am using KDE4.6 on my new distro (Mint 10 KDE) and instead of 
icons I have 'widgets'. A single click on a widget does not seem to 
select it and pressing the enter key has no effect.

Is this one of the 'improvements' that I must learn to live with now, 
or is there some way around this?
