Hm. Just checked Skypes fees - 2.9p connection fee and 1.4p a
minute. That's not that competitive, really. Proprietary format,
no phone support and they charge for it too.. Hmmm

If you use Skype for calls to phones extensively, they also offer
subscriptions with varying amounts of inclusive minutes, up to
"unlimited" (5 euros/month for calls to UK landlines).

I don't pay for any of my calls...

In which case, Skype's fees are not very competitive ;-)

Heh.. Neil doesn't pay because he resells services from Utility Whorehouse ;-)

However, if the reason you don't pay for them is because they are included in another subscription (e.g landline rental with inclusive calls) then it may be worth comparing e.g. landline with no inclusive calls + Skype (or other VOIP provider).

It gets really hard to compare things when they're bundled.

What do other VOIP services charge?

Anything from free (yup, free!) to more than what BT charge.

Free: http://backsla.sh/betamax

All it'll cost you is your own time...

More than BT - well - who knows. But they are out there, depending on the package. Some VoIP operators pretend they're traditional legacy providers and charge per "sip trunk" (whatever that is - sip has no such facility, but they charge it becaose they can or because they're using licensed hardware that charges them per sip channel in-use), so you'll find you have a standing charge per extension or number then your call fees on top of that.
