Yes. I'd write a tarfile to it. Actually I'd just write a tarfile to the raw device, or use dump or cpio - well for the OP's original idea of using it as a backup - treat them as tapes - disks in enclosures are about the same price as high-end tapes these days ... run something like amanda to keep track of them too.
