I'm not a huge fan of what FreeNAS uses for its software RAID (GM? I
don't remember what it's called) - I run it in a VMware VM with two
1TB drives passed through. If you did so much as to think about
breathing it would break the array and lose all the data. This might
be because of VMware, but running the drives separately has been no
problem in the same VM.

(I wasn't doing it for the speed, mainly to combine the two drives as
one volume)
