Do you mean it won't boot from the XP CD?

If so, that isn't down to the hard drive being formatted to ext3 (or 
whatever format has been chosen).  It's more likely that the machine 
isn't set to boot from CD in the BIOS, or it's a faulty drive or a dodgy CD.

Can you boot from an Ubuntu CD at all?
