[LUG] Happiness is a fully working laptop on Linux !

Hi,

I just had to share with all of you my joy at getting my newish acer aspire laptop (2920) working on Mandriva with an XP virtual box. I am especially happy because it was so straightforward and also because I was not expecting to be able to do this at all!

When I got my laptop, I was very happy with it but, very disappointed to find out that Vista was installed - I didn't really want it. I used Vista for a while but, really came to loathe it. It was getting slower and slower to boot. It was incompatible with most of my software and just kept crashing. Due to it's warranty, I couldn't re-install on the existing hard drive so, Phil gave me another drive and suggested I gave Linux a try before I threw the laptop out of the window.

However, I did some research on the net and it turned out that even downgrading it to XP looked like being quite a nightmare involving the use of chinese drivers because Acer had only provide English ones for Vista. I figured that if XP wouldn't run on it, then I had no chance with Linux. But, how wrong I was!

Mandriva 2008 has installed beautifully and so far, everything works. In fact the wireless that was quite temperamental under Vista is working really well.

Therefore, I have no hesitation in recommending it for laptops. In fact, I am intending to try out Mandriva Mini on our sub notebook as soon as it becomes available.

regards

Viv
