Which distro is suitable for this old laptop running at
500Mhz and with 256MB RAM? It has been running Kubuntu 6.06
so perhaps a later version might suit.

I was running fedora 6 on a PII 400 with 256 ram about a year ago. As long as you switch the desktop out for something lightweight like XFCE or even no desktop at all like fluxbox or flwm or something like that.

Just grabbing an XFCE distro (like http://www.xubuntu.org/) is the easiest thing to do.
