This is not a business use scenario. When I am behind my router as well, I use either Thunderbird or (preferably) ClawsMail to connect to my unsecured IMAP server. I also send via my unsecured SMTP server (same machine). When I'm out and about I can easily check my email from any browser, however I do not always have my laptop with me. I am hoping to implement a VPN so even when I'm out and about with my laptop, I can still access my email in the "regular" way... however, as I mentioned, I do not always have my laptop with me. I do, however, always have my mobile with me. I have just got myself a nice shiny new N95 that has WiFi capabilities... so I can check my emails from my 'phone easily from WiFi hotspots anywhere. I do not think it is so crazy to want a webmail tool who's screen arrangement works well on small (240 x 320) displays for the occasional access. Surely that is easier than either trying to find a VPN client for whatever VPN tools I decide to implement or farting around securing my system just so I can have the occasional access via my 'phone.
