Whats the issue with upgrade XP packages? I've about 4 of them lying
around and want to reinvogorate a system for my 5 yr old to play games
on (an original Shuttle amd chipped machine dating from ca 2002 with
Windows ME upon it originally). It's using the same cpu as a dead abit
mobo - I swapped out the original slower amd chip to put on the Shuttle,
as it takes up less room on the corner of desk next to my workstation
(so he can play on the computer whilst I am doing something useful and I
can keep an eye on him as well as keep company).

It's an upgrade too from ME, the Shuttle - I'm ditching the orignal 20gb
disk for a 60 gb disk off the dead abit, and using its nvidia add on vid
card as well other than the native Shuttle one, to allow 50/50
dual/triple for XP too, and superior graphics from the 5200 nvidia
chipset (no, not exactly state of the art, but fine for his needs
playing 90s era games given to us, which are all he needs to keep him
occupied at his age!).

Windows of any variety connected to the adsl internet is Not Allowed in
this household despite 2 firewalls - a not convincing adsl ethernet
router/modem with "firewall" built in, and a more convincing "Light and
Smart" flash carded low wattage dedicated IPCop firewall behind that,
plus firewalls enabled on the specific single machine linux boots on
home PCs.

I am not going to pay money for XP/ME firewall software (and am
downgrading ME to Win98 due to ME's direness).

But as a sideline wonder if there is any convincing free firewall and
virii/trojan etc. software that one can use with XP and W98, tho' I do
resist connecting either Windows boot to the internet (as opposed to
samba links to the home fileserver).
