Ahh I see.  I was going to say, new Macs support Samba shares (or CIFS 
as I think they're called on OSX).

Um... not sure if setting the permissions on the folder and making it 
recursive will fix it.  You might be worth trying specific Mac forums 
(try www.macfixit.com)

Can't think of anything else off the top of my head without digging out 
my iMac and installing OSX on it.
