Yes, but hibernate mode actually saves the contents of memory to the 
hard disk (on Linux, to the swap partition if you have enough room, and 
on Windows to a file on the C: drive) and then the machine completely 
powers off.

I believe that in some cases, a PC going into standby mode can still 
save quite a lot of power by turning a whole load of components off 
(well, this is assuming there is the support there to do it!).
