i might be wrong here but if you remove the cmos battery for 1minute
then replace it,i think it goes back to default setting and gets rid of
passwords, but like i said i could be wrong.

Motherboards usually have a BIOS password reset strategy of some sort -
but it isn't always advertised widely for obvious reasons.

But if it is a BIOS password the fact it is XP would be redundant, we'd
need to know motherboard/type.

On the downside some BIOSes do things to the hard disk to make hacking
the bios password difficult, so I'd start with the motherboard
documentation if trying to sort a BIOS password issue.

If it was the Windows password try logging in as Administrator (with no password)
If it auto logins in (or logs in with a predefined user ) can you see "switch user" or log in as another user?
sometimes guest is enabled.....

If not try this boot CD
trinity-rescue-kit.3.3-build-318.iso

if you can get to the the /windows/system32/config  dir and get the sam file

you can use L0phtCrack - (http://www.atstake.com/research/lc3/) or
cain&able
loadhive will open another's registry file on a working XP machine, I have used this to recover XP licence keys from users who have "lost the sticker" for their Machine but who have the Original CD.
