I'm struggling with a similar issue myself.  Not sure whether the
following is any help...

If you type "root (" at the grub shell and then press <tab> it will
tell you whether/how it sees the usb device.

I have found the following helpful (ish), although they refer to floppy boots.

Also I have had some success with the "fromusb" method in DSL.
