Re: [LUG] Helping newbies

It's a problem because your wife comes along and switches on the computer,
goes and gets her cup of tea and then starts screaming about this strange
alien thing that has taken over her nice cosy setup. You then get dragged
away from the ultra important things that you are doing to fix it.

I came across this for the first time on Edubuntu this week. A damned great
flag obliterates the screen saying an upgrade is available and that it will
improve the working of your computer and that if you don't upgrade the aliens
will come and get you. I had put Mepis on the front of the menu and the
upgrade left the menu as it was but stuck the 3 Ubuntu options on the front
again. After a few upgrades it must be the longest boot menu in the world.

This sort of activity is one of the things that drives you mad in Windows. I
control my operating system and unasked for interference is not wanted, thank
you very much. Ubuntu is in the bin.
