[LUG] Long-distance printing

(well, long-ish)

My fileserver is in the cellar. 10 to 15 metres away and on the ground
floor is my multi-function USB printer. I wish to connect one to the
other by some method that preferably does not involve running a new
cable, though I'll accept that as a last resort.

HP do a nice little jetdirect converter box for the princely sum of
an arm and a leg. Alternatively, loads of people do USB "print server"
devices, some of which allegedly even speak IPP, but the only one I've
tried was rubbish and crashed regularly, so I wouldn't try another
unless someone told me it definitely worked happily with Linux.

I don't want a separate printer and scanner as space is limited, but if
there's a reasonably-priced network-attached printer/scanner/copier, I'd
go for that.

Any recommendations?

(And no, changing my name to Igor and working in the cellar is not an
option.)

James
