Well that depends, if the PC has a Serial ATA hard drive then it is 
quite possible the CD/DVD drive is on /dev/hda

James, do you know what make the CD/DVD drive is?

That does sound likely.  My NEC DVD writer takes a good 3 or 4 seconds 
to recognise a blank disc.
