As you succinctly state - the VM could already be compromised.
Putting a watertight room in a sinking ship isn't going to keep it afloat.
You could run linux and browse securely with that and then run the sinking 
ship within a VM tho.. - but not Vista as M$ has (finally - new technology 
confuses them so) worked out the DRM falls apart so the whole raison d'etre 
is nullified!
