Internet (small i) is used to refer to any internetworked network.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internetworking

It isn't in wide usage. The description "internet protocols" is commonly
used to describe the family of protocols that connect networks, of which
Internet Protocol is but one example.

I'd say WAN and internet were roughly synonymous. Although WAN is
sometimes used only to refer to the interconnects.

I think intranet and extranet came along later tended to displace
internet, because in practice most internets fell into one of those
categories.
