Thanks to everyone who replied about my video problem on Ubuntu. It seemed we (my wife and I) were lacking the packages kaffeine-xine and w32codecs. Both now installed, and we are watching the videos we want to in kaffeine. The message "no URI handler implemented for rtsp://..." appeared because we were trying to use gstreamer as backend; switching to xine solved our problem. I am still thinking whether, or how, the message itself could be made plainer for the benefit of the comparatively inexperienced.
