The Microsoft Core fonts are available for most GNU/Linux distributions, installing these should eliminate the font question, and allow you to view fonts as intended without including them in Word documents. However since the Microsoft licence under which they are distributed gratis, prevents modification, they are "non-free" and thus only available through downloads for Debian users. Do note however that some folk hold Arial in fairly low regard, but hey something Microsoft gave away gratis, and with good intentions (so everyone would see documents as the author intended). Now if they would only allow modified distribution I'd be happy to install them at home. Font licences are a minefield, at least the Microsoft one is easy to understand. I don't know how GNOME fonts like Bitstream made it into Debian free, other than it would be a lot poorer without them. If Peter needs help installing the MS Core fonts, tell us what distro, or try a search engine. Not sure what is scarier, editing a small magazine with a mixture of tools, or trying to use Word to create a magazine. They might actually prefer Open Office if they do a lot of work with boxes and the like.
