Hi all, I noticed a post on GLLUG about one of the open geodata/maps projects needing hosting, and having seen occasional offers of free (but usually a bit old) hardware, I thought it would be pretty cool to use one to solve the other. There are quite a few open data and open source projects around that could do with test servers, website, svn, etc - I know I could really use a test server and svn for Maypole, and I'm sure plenty of other developers could do with more than sourceforge or IBM's compile farms can offer (i.e. http and other access to the servers). So I thought - how hard can it be to get together somewhere with low rent, cheap commercial DSL and a load of old boxes. I'm sure plenty of people who could do with experience in administering systems would be interested in volunteering to help or do odd jobs, and many of the open source developers who would benefit would certainly be happy to chip in with the administration. Given that it should be possible to get hold of hardware, and peoples time for free or at very low costs - that leaves somewhere to put the hardware and a way to connect them - obviously we'd need rent, the power costs will add up, as will decent DSL connectivity - so we'd need sponsers... anyone got ideas of how we could get funding for such a thing? Anyone else interested in helping to organise it, or find out how we could make it work?
