There have been some problems with 64 bit, big endian and SMP systems, certainly the original ralink drivers have many problems with non 386/32 hardware. The rt2x00 rewrite project has been written from the ground up with a lot of thought to the design so that spin locking and endian conversion etc works properly and SMP and 64 bit etc will work. But the developers have little 64 bit hardware available and the rt2x00 project has been delayed because of the ieee80211 stack and in fact we have just switched stacks to the Devicescape stack instead of the intel stack.

Card has been returned to store, swapped for a wifi router which looks
like it runs some variant of everyones favorite...

At least you can't go too wrong with routers, your presented with an Ethernet port and 9/10 times a web config interface :-)

And as soon as you have more than one PC having to use one as a gateway soon becomes a PITA (even though it is easy with linux) unless you have a dedicated server. I have this problem at home and as debian now has shorewall 3.X series in the repositories (unstable) my firewall is currently broken (yes it did tell me i would need to change things when it upgraded, i just haven't been bothered to find out what yet, and i am sure some of this situation is my own fault anyway for not doing things completly the debian way)
