Replaced my dud USB 2.0 memstick with a different model, allocated it as /dev/sda1 with an auto fs in /etc/fstab - set up a nice Debian desktop icon and it works a treat. However, I did try it out by CLI initially :) Success story. Thanks everyone. -- W.
