[LUG] Introduction and opinion sought...

Hello people,

I was recently installing Gentoo and while sitting there waiting for it to
compile for donkey's i figured i'd come along and sign up to the DCLUG...

I live in Honiton and have used linux on and off since slackware 3.2 / mid
90's. 1995(? who knows!) I've used quite a few different linux's but have
always gone backwards and forwards between that and windows because
something, somewhere will always prevent me from going over completely - i'm
also a developer by trade and until probably the last six months that had
been 100% windows.

So anyway, i've currently just gone back to linux (gentoo as mentioned) and
will try my best this time to make it stick even if i have to do it via
emulation.

Onto the opinion bit. It's becoming apparent that the shuttle pc that i have
(SN41G2) is starting to get a bit long in the tooth. I've twice now had to
vacuum the thing out to unclog it (from dust) and redo the thermal paste on
the CPU to keep the temperatures at bay. And compiling up gentoo made it
painfully obvious that the Athlon XP processor doesn't cut it quite as well
as i'd like it to (even if it's quite powerful by some peoples standards!)

I'm therefore looking for something new. Would like AMD64, probably SATA. Must
be NEAR SILENT if at all possible.

Saw an IWILL ZPC64 in a mag yesterday. Anyone got any experience of them? I
don't think they're SATA, but other than that. Noisy?

Failing that, any opinions on very quiet AMD64 stuff. Needs to be either
shuttle size or at least small, just because of my desk (or lack of!)

Anyways, enough for now. Sorry for waffling.

Martin.
