Regarding the max hardware updates, i have come across this a few times with customers machines.  Ring MS and they give you a new activation code with very little fuss.

Not forgetting that if it is Windows XP Home *spit*, Microsoft very 
kindly *allow* you a maximum of 5 hardware updates a year.  That's nice 
of them isn't it?
