It is the X server, it is usually called Xfree86 in Debian, so I assume
you've loaded X.org.

Your kind of stuck with it if you like GUIs I suspect.

The "ps" CPU output of 30% sounds odd, did you run "ps" immediately
after starting one of the big desktops (i.e. logging into GNOME or KDE)?

Use "top" to see if it stays hogging CPU.
