My experience has been that RTF is by far the best way to transfer text 
documents between any version of word and openoffice (and others too). It 
preserves formatting and everything better than importing native formats 
and is designed to be shared between word processors, which it does well.

MS has an interest in making sure that Rich Text Format works as many of 
its word processors have been using it for a while and they don't want to 
alienate paying customers.
