Does this friend have any experience with linux ?
If they asking for a general concensus, they will have a hard time IMHO.
I think they should be researching linux compat. hardware first, then
categorise that hardware by distro compat.
After that, they should build a box to that spec. and get everything
running properly (ppp usb etc)
Once that is done, they have a pattern for future builds.
They will have to support these boxes after all ;-)
Personally I favour FC2/FC3 as an easy to use windows-a-like (I even
have an XP silver skin on my install) and although they still take some
configuring , they work great for basic email/web/office boxes.
Also, FC2 isn't including crippled software (xine - dvd / xmms - mp3)
like some I can mention (suse).
And yum is a breeze.
so it depends on what they are wanting to offer and to whom ....
If they are doing these machines just for "end-users" then the desktop
environment is key, otherwise, most distros will run servers like
apache/mysql/pgsql/sendmail etc.
Also, I think that once they have established a line of machines that
run linux properly, they should sell those machines at the relevant
discount compared to windows boxes, to underline the financial benefits
of linux. Ok, so they need a bit more working out initially, but why
else would joe public consider moving away from windows ?
Just my thoughts anyway.

alan
