Re: [LUG] Debian

hi there,

Anybody out there using latest version of Debian linux?

I tried out debian V2.2 when i first dabbled with Linux but found it a bit difficult to get into. I`m using RedHat at the moment which is fine..

How does the latest version compare to v2.2?

i've found version 3.0 to be pretty good - the apps are more up to date - xfree86 is up to version 4 for example.

installation is getting very easy - the only thing i do initially is to get the NIC name and look up on google groups which module to use - then during the install pick and install that module - everything else gets installed over the network.

also, i use the 2.4 kernel and also recompile a kernel to get the most out of the speed.

Does it still use dselect? or is there a graphical interface (KDE/GNOME now?

i always found dselect to be confusing - 'aptitude' has been released and does the same job but much better - also, it runs in a console for machines where no X server has been installed.

there are graphical replacements but aptitude does such a good job that i've never checked them out.

Is `apt-get` really better than RPM`s? Can you just choose which package you want then it downloads it, sorts out the dependancies and installs stuff for you?

i found RPM's to be really akward to use - with depency conficts etc - but apt has been perfect. i think RPM's are better now.

What other distubutions use `apt-get`? SUSE?

there is a really user-friendly one called xandros - and lindows is based on debian as well.

HTH,

Mike
