Does DNS work? 

I usually try "ping www.sun.com" see if it looks up the address.
nslookup is the tool I use if that fails it could be IP connectivity or
DNS.

ping 192.18.97.241 (Thats sun again) will show you if the IP
connectivity is working.

If it is DNS and not IP mail me your /etc/resolv.conf file.
