You should be able too
1) log out to xdm/kdm/whatever
2) press ctrl-alt-f2, then get to the console, 
3) log in as root
4) killall (xdm|kdm|gdm) - the thing to kill depends on what login program you 
use.

You can also try, from lilo, "linux init=3", which should stop you from going 
into x.
