Call for testing: introducing the Laptop Integration Testing project https://freebsdfoundation.org/blog/call-for-testing-introducing-the-laptop-integration-testing-project/

I was with helping them out right up to the point I needed to install
FreeBSD to main storage.

Feel that a live boot approach would be the way, especially since they
are presumably after laptops that don't work well with FreeBSD as well
as those that do.

I agree here,   I am sure live  cd's are designed for testing,  given that we can also mount other file systems (e.g usb sticks or log in to say nextcloud) then once we have booted in to the live system,  run various commands to see what hardware is working,  save everything to the USB stick we want to use for data,   then once booted back in to the other OS,  use that to compile and submit reports.

Even with GNU/Linux based systems it is good to know everything or the core components work properly before booting.

I guess using a virtual machine is possible,  but that may not always give the same results as using the actual hardware.
