I had issues before trying to get a particular DVD to play (Captain Fantastic)- Spent ages trying all sorts- there is a thread somewhere earlier on the list...
Randomly the other day I needed to install the restricted-extras etc. to play another encrypted dvd (I'm on a new install due to virus fun)
I ran the following...
sudo apt-get install gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly libdvdread4 libdvdnav4 libdvd-pkg
then: sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg

...and now even Captain fantastic plays...!
Worth a try.
