I find it easier to use GIMP as I can export in JPG or png and adjust size to fit website page at same time.
However I work on individual images at a time so do not do a folder's worth at once.

BIMP is your friend for that. A Batch image processing plug-in for GIMP - https://alessandrofrancesconi.it/projects/bimp/

Can be a little fiddly and for some things you need to know the module name, but generally pretty easy once you're familiar with it. Processing of whole folders or selected images within a folder, then save wherever you like - usually elsewhere to preserve the originals of course.
