HiI had a similar issue with Debian, however in this case Debian is happy to install lightning but informs me that installing enigmail (gnupg support) breaks thunderbird.
Has there been a major change in thunderbird that has put it out of comparability with several other programs?
I did manage to install enigmail via the extensions manager, so maybe try installing lightning via extensions.
I can understand why this situation is rater irritating, enigmail people can get round by not using it, but calenders are pretty essential if you rely on them, and they sync with phone apps etc.
