I worked under an 'owner/autocrat' once, difficult guy, but he got
things done so they fitted his view and use to world of his stuff. It
worked.
Sold out to corporation. (on retirement, no family to continue), it
changed, became more people friendly but internal squabbles now had no
'real final umpire' so eventually it failed.

Is Linux kernel likely to go this way?

By the nature of open source, anybody can become the maintainer of a Linux derived kernel, which pretty much guarantees that there will always be an open-source Linux in one frame or another that is maintained to current software development standards as long as there is an interest. It is fairly obvious that the Linux kernel reached a critical-mass of interest and ubiquity that spans all technology a long time ago, that means it is likely to be around in one shape or another until it is toppled by something better or human civilisation ends. In reality I feel it's likely that Linus is/will be important to Linux in name only, and he gets a lot of press and attention which has affected his ego over the years. There have actually been quite a few different kernel maintainers over the years, and it is something often overlooked by the mainstream.
