Yes, no, maybe.

I kinda figured the discussion would head in this direction.

On the one hand, I totally understand the reasoning behind "let's only use FLOSS-friendly social tools to promote the LUG".

On the other hand, surely doing so is a bit like *ahem* shouting in the wind.

There are *a lot* of people on Facebook. Surely more people will hear about us running events if "we" (those of us who are on, and who use Facebook) post & share about the events publicly, than if we stick to posting about them on social channels that are very thinly used?

I mean, you don't get more people to church by only ever talking to those who already go to church.

Talking of "mixed messages" - what message does an abandoned Facebook page send? Does that sound like an active group to you? To me it sounds more like a group that is no more.

Grant. :)

I agree, it would be like expecting Windows users to adopt Linux without engaging with them. Telling other Linux users how great it is, is preaching to the choir. On that note billions of Facebook users are Windows users and require the engagement.

I think a lot of fb users probably use mobile platforms e;g android which even within that there are floss alternatives.

Maybe we need to have a discussion as to what we really want as a Linux user group, who are we targeting etc, maybe promote sites such as f-droid for floss Apps, etc, based on experience.

Send the message that the expertise is out there and the lug is a place to find this.ÂÂ

If we are going to dump facebook,ÂÂ we need to write a post to say that and back it up to make a good argument.

There are products such as fairphone, which are designed to be ethical, priced such that all the people in the chain are properly compensated for their work loaded with free software etc. Maybe people want to switch from fb but are too tied in with their phone, can you really delete (purge) the fb app, is there an app that can clean up after facebook appl deletion ? is (from experience) this app doing its' job. l? any phones no pre loaded with fb,

Even the people who make fairphone don't seem to be on alternative social media.

if people start to lose sales + commission due to preloaded fb app then maybe they will sit up and take note. Or if people gain sales due to no fb app others may also listen.

I am sure given recent news reports people are starting to think about dumping facebook, so how can we help people, ?
