Enable SSH on the laptop.

Next time it does it instead of shutting it down, SSH to it from another
computer and check the logs first. When you're done looking for clues,
you can also reboot or shutdown the laptop cleanly instead of guessing
where the icons are.

The first rule of fixing computers is "gather more information".
