To DC Lug. Dear folk, any help welcomed. 20160610 I have reset a number of older laptops to reuse with a Linux distro to replace original MS Windows Vista. Mostly all successful. All originally tested on Knoppix live Linux to show they 'worked'. However I find one machine a Fujitsu Siemens model ["Fujitsu Siemens esprimo mobile v5535 laptop" Celeron Mobile 540-1.86GHZ, 120GB HDD, 4GB RAM, 15.4 inch TFT, DVD-RW, was Vista Basic graphics SiS (?)] runs DVD Live Linux distros (Ubuntu, Puppy, Knoppix, ect.) correctly at screen resolution of 1024x768 but when any of these distros are installed to hard disc via ISO burnt to DVD , computer only allows 640x480; and xrandr shows this as only choice. All control screens off visible screen only partly visible.[why do folk put select/command buttons at bottom right hand side?] While xrandr in Live Knoppix shows up to 1280 x 765 available resolution Is there a way to force a specific screen resolution when installing a Linux Distro to a hard disc? Am I missing (ignorant?) something in the way I set up the installation?
In the first instance, run: lspci -vnn | grep VGA -A 12 Which should help us work out what graphics chipset you have (Googling tells us it's a "SiS Mirage 3+ Graphics" though) Googling that for Ubuntu implies it's fiddly to get working [http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1573218] regs -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG https://mailman.dclug.org.uk/listinfo/list FAQ: http://www.dcglug.org.uk/listfaq
