Re: [LUG] Playing dvd films

VLC is pre-installed in some distros, such as Mint, and DVDs play out of the box. The newest incarnation also plays BluRay discs, if the PC has a BD drive.

Strangely I have never tried to play a DVD video film on my laptop
before. So far without success. I have tried various programs, but
there seems to be a decoding problem.

Are there some files (eg codecs) that I need to install? The laptop
sees the device but comes up with an error message. Gstream backend
error.

Thanks for any help,

Your Xubuntu iirc. Try VLC I seem to remember it asks if you want to install the required packages.
