Just interrupt boot and read the log messages and check disk space.

Unless you've seriously locked it down you can nearly always set init=/bin/bash if easier ways in aren't working.

Probably out of disk space in the update or something silly, although try login should work. Always worth trying ssh first if it is usually enabled.
