Thanks. I've been reinstalling various sets of libraries etc but hadn't got to there. We shall see.

This seems related to an issue I had recently which drove me mad for a
couple of weeks - I'm on Ubuntu instead of Debian and it was firefox
crashing on me, rather than Iceweasel but even my log output was similar
to yours. After very nearly switching to windows I hit upon the
following, which does seem to have fixed my issues:
sudo apt-get install libc6 --reinstall
