What driver are you using for the GTX970?
Tried Nouveau. It worked but did random fails.
Shouldn't need the 304 legacy driver.I'll get one like yours.
Currently have a large virtual screen defined as fb which slides back and forth, while the second card drives a second monitor, but I get no window management system on it.
I'd mind only slightly if the applications I want to display there would obey --geometry arguments up there.
New card.
Possibly time for a new computer, actually.

Have you tried using the Nvidia legacy package, or Nouveau?
