If everything works but HTTP fetch, I'd be thinking packet size issues like MTU too, I'd force MTU really low. I'd try slower speeds in case it can't keep up, I'd tcpdump the packets to see what is happening at top layer.

Can also be data related if it is a novel layer underneath.... Does any tcp session work? Email/telnet?
