It's miles ahead of anything else. These days it's integrates well* with other LDAP solutions (RedHat Directory Server for example) and if you're allergic to Windows, it can be run on Linux Samba 4 servers. Full integration to the point of controlling Linux clients via GPO requires third party and frequently expensive tools though, which is why most people don't bother with that bit.
